Super Badass Treble Bleed"Best of Both Worlds!"
This is not your dad's treble bleed...
Don't get me wrong - I like regular old treble bleeds. I make and ship them all over the world - and I've used them myself for years.
But we all end up asking that never-ending question with no answer
-- Parallel/Duncan style? Or Series/Kinman style?
With a Parallel/Duncan-type circuit, we get the most effective retention of highs at any volume level, but the pot swell characteristic changes from an arc to more of a bell curve. Everything is all cool until you get down to about 1/3 volume, and then it just dumps right off.
So we go to a Series/Kinman-type circuit, which retains the original swell-profile of the pot. But then we find that it's not nearly as effective at retaining the highs as we roll off the volume. Once you start rolling off, you still get muddiness - not as much as without any filter at all, but it's still there.
And you know that
technically
, the capacitor and resistor values should actually be different for 250k pots vs 500k pots, right? We rarely ever bother with that - but the components of a high pass filter really do need different values depending on the pot's resistance value.
I even bought one of those fancy
Fender ToneSavers
in each version and cut them open. Imagine my dismay to discover it's just a regular old treble bleed with a single capacitor and resistor wired in series -
for ??!! WHAT??!!
I've researched, fiddled, and done endless A/B (and C/D/E/F) testing - and I'm really excited to introduce my own
"Super Badass Treble Bleed"
circuits - in both 250k and 500k versions.
My
3-component
circuits are the best of both worlds. You get the frequency retention of a parallel-type, with the pot-swell profile retention of a series-type - in two pot-specific versions, precisely configured for the resistance of the potentiometer.
Installs in seconds just like any other treble bleed - just solder to the two "in and out" lugs of the volume pot.
Like I said - I'm not talking smack about the high pass filters we've all used for years. I'll still make and sell "regular old" treble bleed circuits, and I always will. In many cases, one of the basic styles we've all used forever is perfectly fine for our playing style.
That said - if you're tired of trying (and failing) to get
consistent
retention of high frequencies at any volume level, -AND-
consistent
retention of the original pot swell characteristic -
at the same time
- give one of these a try.
You won't be disappointed.
