Special Tax Stamps for Retail Liquor Dealers.
The engraving at the top center of the stamps is of Mercury sitting next to an old still.
1874 is Plate number 5. 1876 is Plate number 2. The plate numbers are above the word "States" 1877 is Plate number 7. The plate number is above the word "United"
This format was started in 1873 and ran through 1885. Each year is printed on a different color paper, which is an identity and is constant for that year in all tax categories. Each year (except 1873, the first year of issue) has its year date in large colored figures in the body of the stamp and the categories of use, in this case Retail Liquor Dealers, are in black letters through the year date. The denominations in dollars are shown in the black vignettes at the lower left of each stamp.
1876 and 1877 are printed on old experimental silk paper.
The stamps are canceled by punched holes. They each have one coupon still attached for the month of April of the following year. Above the coupons on the left side of the engraved frame are the words "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau. Engraving & Printing."
