Description
I am not an expert on jewelry however I will do my best to describe the following object. It is a very old woman's brooch with Sterling Silver flowers & leaves on round wires consisting of two sections joined together with two lengths of fine chain. There is a large half and a smaller matching half. The three red stones have not been properly identified and the piece has not been appraised.
I do not have a local jeweler that I can trust.
This fine jewelry offering is most likely a real antique that was purchased before World War I.
I will share the provenance with you. It belonged to my mom born in 1925. Most likely given to her by her mother or grandmother. The family was well to do surviving the great depression and living near the Great Lakes at the time. They also owned a farm and house lots in Hollywood. She owned and accumulated a lot of valuable jewelry with diamonds and gold throughout her life.
This particular broch appears to have the original presentation jewelry box that is clearly marked on the lower right corner: RICHARD HUDNUT/ NEW YORK PARIS. The Richard Hudnut Company was well known for cosmetics and there are plenty of antique glass bottles out there with the Richard Hudnut embossing. After several years of researching off & on I cannot locate any information on jewelry sold under this name.
The larger brooch is clearly marked
STERLING
on the back within an oval on the back of a leaf. No other markings are visible. Each section has its own pin and a double chain connects both sections.
All three stones are a round cut with an eight sided flat face.
Each is securely held in place with four prongs.
Using a millimeter size chart it looks like all three stones are approximately 8.2 millimeter. The chain looks like it has a coppery gold color. Using a loupe that is only 8x I have looked at the stones repeatedly. I have not purchased a 10x. I can see some roughness below the polished facets. The stones are not visible from the back to shine a light thru.
To conclude, I am not an expert on jewelry and I cannot guarantee or warrant the composition of the three Red Stones They may be only Ruby Red Glass or Garnets.
I am leaning towards
Rubies
due to the following factors: the age, the four prongs on each stone, double chains an a pin on each section. Will ship by Priority mail, signature required.
